Principal Systems Engineer

A world leader in transportation security is looking for a Principal Systems Engineer for its MD location.

Aided by a BS degree in a related discipline (EE/ME/SE), 8+ years experience in systems engineering and understanding of ISO 9001 quality system requirements, the successful candidate will serve as technical authority for interpreting, planning, organizing, executing, and directing assignments for integrated system development projects with moderate complexity with supervisory oversight. In conjunction with program management, the incumbent will determine and organize work scope for integrated product teams and subcontractors.

Responsibilities include:

  • Visit subcontractors/supplies as required to ensure proper communication, understanding, and testing of requirements and interfaces.
  • Author specification and/or statement of work documents, and participate in subcontractor teaming/selection process.
  • Provide tactful leadership, technical guidance, and support to engineers, scientists, technicians, contractors, or subcontractors assigned to the project.
  • Support business development activities, conduct WBS task estimates and fact finding activities as necessary to make bid/no bid decisions, produce proposals, specifications, white papers, and/or product requirements documentation.
  • Plan, coordinate, status, and report engineering baseline and ongoing project estimates. Identify cost, schedule, and technical risks, and propose risk mitigation plans.
  • Maintain status to program management.
  • Professionally interact with government and commercial customer representatives for the purposes of understanding needs, specifications, and requirements.
  • Interact with engineering disciplines such as EE, ME, IE, SW, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Assurance, Test and other specialties to identify and refine architecture solutions.
  • Classify system requirements (i.e. threshold and objective), define appropriate compliance scoring function and/or criteria, and define verification and validation plans.
  • Compare and contrast solution methodology and/or trade studies and ascertain cost, schedule, and risk.
  • Perform functional requirement decomposition activities and use requirements management software tools to load, flow down, map, and disseminate requirements and specifications to appropriate owners.
  • Develop, refine, and communicate processes and facilitate compliance to defined development processes and guidelines.
  • Evaluate team progress, report results obtained, and recommend changes as necessary to meet requirements.
  • Identify, prepare, and present technical solutions to process, science, operational, or engineering problems.
  • Prepare documents associated with government and commercial development activities.
  • Plan and coordinate engineering activities for SRR, PDR, CDR, and TRR milestones.
  • Plan engineering resources, and requirements to support system testing, test failures analyses and corrective actions, and test reports.
  • Plan for resources to support manufacturing during production start-up.
  • Plan, organize, and present technical briefing material as required to support meetings with government, supplier or other technical personnel
  • Support business development activities, conduct WBS task estimates and fact finding activities as necessary to make bid/no bid decisions, produce proposals, specifications, white papers, and/or product requirements documentation.
  • Comply with and ensure department compliance with company health, safety and environmental policies, as well as all applicable U.S. export control and security regulations.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Job Requirements:

  • BS degree in a related discipline (EE/ME/SE)
  • Engineering Manufacturing Experience: 8+ years
  • Excellent leadership qualities and ability to perform tactical responsibilities as necessary.
  • The persona and stature to professionally lead technical teams assigned to development programs ranging from small to large with a wide range of complexity.
  • Experience with the MS Office suite, including Project.
  • Experience with system requirements tracking tools such as DOORS and TeamCenter.
  • Experience with Earned Value Management techniques.
  • Thorough understanding of mechanical, electrical, chemical and software development processes.
  • Strong technical background with regard to complex electro-mechanical systems.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • U.S. Citizen or permanent resident status required.
