Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assume a leadership role in the development and optimization of chemiresistor sensor technology.
  • Plan, execute and complete experiments and projects of considerable scope leading to improvements in sensor technology and the development of new sensor materials.
  • Generate data and analyze the response characteristics of the chemiresistor sensors to understand key performance criteria, such as sensitivity, selectivity and stability, and to select the best materials for specific customer applications.
  • Survey, understand and report the latest developments in sensor technology, identify ways to transfer new ideas and technologies to products, and will cultivate technical relationships outside the company for improvement of sensors and products.
  • Report to the Director of Research and Development and work with considerable independence of the supervisor, as well as direct the daily activities of one or more junior staff members (chemical technicians and research associates).
  • Coordinate efforts with the Engineering Department to improve current testing capabilities and improve data reduction and analysis methods.
  • Work closely with the Manufacturing Department to transfer sensor improvements to products.
  • Handle multiple projects simultaneously and operate in an environment with changing inputs from multiple sources.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or closely related physical science, or M.S. with 2 to 5 years of post-academic job experience. Preference is for candidates with academic and work experience in polymer chemistry and development of chemical and biological sensors. New graduates will be considered depending on thesis subject, specific qualifications and KSAs, and additional experience.
  • Two to five years of experience in development, optimization and testing of chemical or biological sensors for gases and liquids.
  • Two to five years of experience in polymer chemistry; polymer formulation, synthesis, solubility, dispersion and thin-film formation (solution casting, spin coating, air spraying).
  • One or more years of experience in directing and providing technical guidance and oversight to junior staff members and technicians.
  • One or more years of experience in operation and maintenance of manual and automated equipment for liquid and gas handling, gas dilution and mixing, vapor generation from liquids, liquid dispensing and spraying.
