Superintendent

job purpose statement

Field manager on medium to large projects providing overall leadership for on-site field administration, supervision and technical management of all construction operations. With a strong drive to achieve results, the ability to solve problems creatively, and a dedication to client service and relationship management, the Superintendent delivers successful projects that make our communities proud. This position requires considerable judgment and autonomy in performing job duties, and is expected to function effectively with minimal to moderate supervision.

Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Provide leadership and management of Assistant Superintendents’, Project Engineers’, Foreman and subcontractors to ensure that progress is within expected guidelines of safety and quality, and is completed on time and within budget for a successful project outcome.

Mentorship

  • Communicate Client Construction’s vision, mission and values in ways that gain the support of others.
  • Mentor, motivate and guide others to reach personal, professional and company-wide goals.

Teamwork

  • Engage with co-workers in a professional and personable manner. Communicate clearly, and mediate conflicts between team members when they arise.

Business Development

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with Owners, Architects, Subcontractors and Project Stakeholders through effective and consistent communication and coordination.

Safety

  • Develop, implement, and oversee site specific safety plans. Stay in compliance with all regulatory agencies, adhere to all record-keeping requirements and address any safety violations or deficiencies in an appropriate and timely manner, committing to an injury-free work environment.
  • Continually monitor life safety and emergency egress plans during construction to ensure the safety of workers and occupants.
  • Strong knowledge and compliance of OSHA safety regulations to increase safety efforts and reduce injuries and liabilities.
  • Comply with Client Construction’s Internal Safety Program.

Quality Management

  • Work alongside the Project Manager to develop, review and implement project specific quality control plans that adhere to the contract documents as well as Owner’s expectations.

Budget Management

  • Manage self-perform job costs and aid the Project Manager in monthly job cost projections for accurate cost to complete forecasting.
  • Document, track and report project equipment rental requirements and monthly billings.

Schedule Management

  • Work alongside the Project Manager in the development of the overall construction schedule during preconstruction, actively work to update and manage the schedule throughout construction, focus on improving the schedule by eliminating waste and identifying long lead items, help develop pull plan agendas and lead pull plan meetings with subcontractors and field staff.
  • Proficient in Client’s Lean Processes. Oversee and ensure Client’s Last Planner system is effectively implemented on the projects you oversee.
  • Coordinate and manage subcontractor and self-perform manpower performance and projections as well as material requirements to keep the project on schedule and to the highest quality.

Site Logistics

  • Responsible for site logistics and project set up including: mobilization, site utilization, work flow and organization maximizing efficiency while focusing on safety and quality.
  • Responsible for the adherence to the Storm Water Management Plan and implementation of Best Management Practices (BMP).

Communication and Coordination

  • Communicate directly with Senior Superintendents’, President, Operations Manager and Safety Manager on project progress, details and any issues that may arise.
  • Schedule and lead weekly foreman meetings, keeping the field team on schedule with open communication lines.
  • Monitor and communicate project issues and risks that may arise during construction to the Owner, Architect and Key Stakeholders.
  • Participate and assist with project close-out including punch list items, systems start ups, and scheduling training walk-throughs.

Presentation Skills

  • Participate in project interviews, representing Client in a professional manner, to win negotiated work.
  • Occasionally prepare and lead presentations and construction tours to the general public, boards, and outside agencies and organizations – representing Client  Construction in a professional manner.

Technical Skills and training

  • Mastery Knowledge of Procore Construction Management Software
  • Strong Knowledge of Client Construction’s Subcontract
  • Strong Knowledge of Client Construction’s Lean Tools Including Last Planner and Pull Plans
  • Strong Knowledge of Asta Scheduling Software
  • Strong Knowledge of Bluebeam PDF Software
  • Basic Storm Water Compliance Class
  • Advanced Storm Water Managers Course (Re-certify every three years)
  • Affirmative Action Training (Re-certify every year)
  • Harassment Training (Re-certify every year)
  • Driver Safety – Defensive Driving (Re-certify every year)
  • Driver Safety – Distracted Driving (Re-certify every year)

Required safety Training

  • OSHA 10HR (Re-certify every three years, alternating 10HR and 30HR)
  • OSHA 30HR (Re-certify every three years, alternating 10HR and 30HR)
  • First Aid and CPR Certification (Re-certify every two years)
  • Hazard Communication Training (Re-certify every year)
  • Confined Space Competent Person Training (Re-certify every three years, unless changes occur requiring new skills or understanding)
  • Scaffolding Training (Re-certify when changes occur requiring new skills or understanding)
  • Signaling/Rigging Training (Re-certify every five years)
  • Fall Protection Training (Re-certify every two years)
  • Trenching and Excavating Competent Person Training (Re-certify when changes occur requiring new skills or understanding)
