Mechanical Estimator

The Mechanical Estimator estimates a wide range of plumbing including below grade waste & vent, below grade process piping, storm drains and natural gas, process piping systems, HVAC wet and dry, Fire Sprinkler, Schematic budgeting, Design Development budgeting and estimating. Coordination of the all the above with the company and respective subcontractors, Design Engineers and Owners.

Duties and Responsibilities:           

  • Provide budget estimates of the mechanical systems (take-off and pricing) listed above for major projects using computerized estimate program or historic information.
  • Review mechanical, electrical and architectural drawings and specifications during schematic design, design development and through final construction document.
  • Provide and submit alternates and cost savings ideas to the proposed mechanical systems as listed above in the summary.
  • Prepare final interim and final estimates with detailed take-off and pricing of all piping, ductwork and equipment.
  • Prepare and select the appropriate mechanical bidders list for the various bid packages.
  • Draft and write bid documents for the all the mechanical bid packages and coordinate the scopes of the various systems with the respective subcontractors and company preconstruction project team.
  • Review mechanical bids in details for scope delineation and issue work authorization to proceed to the successful bidder.
  • Prepare documents for pre-purchasing various mechanical equipment with deliveries which conflict with the project schedule.
  • Review field change orders for quantities, material take-off and compliance with current material pricing, current labor rates, and contract mark ups.
  • Maintain a current mechanical subcontractor list for HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection.
  • Prepare and maintain projects historic costs and data for budgeting and references.
  • Provide training to Project Engineers for the mechanical systems.
  • Other responsibilities include: Being proactive in solving problems for the mechanical systems, Providing input for the project schedule regarding the mechanical systems and coordinate the scope of work with the Superintendents and Project Managers, Reviewing the mechanical systems and propose alternates for Owner review and acceptance.

Qualifications:

  • College graduate or 3-6 years’ experience in estimating for all mechanical systems.
  • MEP Cost Engineer or Sr. Cost Engineer wanting to train to be a Mechanical Estimator is acceptable.
  • Must have a great work ethic and willing to learn the procedures in the preconstructions department.
  • Must have the understanding on how to be a team player.
  • Estimating experience for all mechanical systems, work experience with a mechanical engineering firm and or work experience with a design/build mechanical contractor.
