Port Engineer

We are currently seeking a Port Engineer in the Long Beach, CA area. The Port Engineer (PE) is the lead engineer reporting directly to the Division VP/GM. The PE accepts a high level of accountability and display strong initiative for operating and maintaining the division’s floating and support assets, including providing direct support to the tug engineers. Effective communication, coordination and personnel interface are keys to job success. The PE needs to set a good example of safe work practices.

Specific Responsibilities include:

Manage Local Engineering Activities:

  • Review Daily Engineering Reports from vessels
  • Recommend safety improvements
  • Implement and monitor the Preventive Maintenance Plan
  • Manage and complete vessel repairs
  • Complete capital improvement projects
  • Ensure regulatory and class requirements are met
  • Purchase Engine Department spares and consumables
  • Oversee Engineer development, training and qualifications
  • Look for and implement cost-saving measures
  • Maintain an intimate knowledge of each vessel’s systems and status
  • Maintain corporate databases as applicable to the Engineering Dept

Interface with Corporate Construction and Repair Department:

  • Seek guidance and approval of major repairs, modifications or equipment overhauls
  • Help with specifications and completion of vessel dry-dockings

Maintain Shore Side Engineering Facilities and Support Equipment:

  • Ensure Regulatory compliance
  • Maintain and track inventories and ensure readiness of support equipment (i.e. forklift, crane, etc.)

Manage Local Vendor Relationships:

  • Vet, select, coordinate, schedule, and pay vendors
  • Ensure vendor Quality Control and SMS conformance

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced Marine Engineering expertise evidenced by at least BS degree in Marine Engineering or equivalent experience, five or more years of relevant engineering experience in a licensed capacity, and past or current USCG engineering licensure
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs
  • Demonstrated good judgment, work flexibility, and high level of initiative and organization
