Companys’ Radiation Instrument & Security Instruments (RMSI) Business Unit is a leading provider of analytical instruments in the radiation detection and measurement industry. The business unit generates over $100M in annual revenues with approximately 400 employees. Primary operating/manufacturing locations are in North America (Oakwood Village, OH and San Diego, CA) Europe (Erlangen, Germany)

The Director of Operations is a leadership role within the Radiation Measurement and Security Instruments (RMSI) business unit which reports to the VP/GM.  The incumbent serves as the leader of operations for 3 sites (Oakwood, OH; San Diego, CA; Erlangen, DE) and business oversight of RMSI products manufactured in our China Manufacturing Center. This individual is responsible for the overall development and leadership of the RMSI operations organization employees engaged in the profitable manufacture of high quality products serving the Nuclear, Medical, Industrial and Safety & Security needs of our customers.  This is an end-to-end responsibility – from budgeting and asset management through the safe and efficient operation of factories engaged in electro-mechanical assembly operations on a wide range of product (high mix / mixed volume production). Operational excellence through the use of contemporary Lean Manufacturing and Supply Chain management concepts is another critical focus area of the position.  This leader will establish management systems and processes that enhance the production of high quality products for meeting/exceeding customer service expectations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Holds the overall responsibility for defining and communicating the vision, mission, and operational objectives for the RMSI operations team
  • Directs the overall Production Management and Order Fulfillment activities; acting to ensure safe, efficient, and high quality production, On Time Shipment (OTS), especially to customer request and positive customer experiences
  • Oversees the Materials Management and Logistics functions to drive robust production planning and scheduling, inventory management, and delivery performance. Serves as the chief Customer Advocate in resolving prioritization issues
  • Partners with the quality leads at each site to insure that the site quality cultures are solidly based on process controls and continuous improvement, and that production is executed in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements, internal standards, and customer requirements
  • Leads the sourcing team to maintain cost-efficient availability of materials and supplies, and achievement of inventory objectives
  • Accountable for the overall financial performance of the operations team, focusing on revenue recognition, cost management, working capital management, and cash flow objectives
  • Develops and manages in accordance with an approved budget, maintains a system of internal controls, and holds the overall responsibility for safe-guarding assets
  • Plans and recommends investments to drive cost reduction, productivity improvement, and process controls to insure quality of all products
  • Drives continuous improvement and standard work across all organizational elements of the Enterprise using Key Performance Indicator metrics formats, balanced scorecards, and other systems of maintaining measurement and accountability
  • Consistently demonstrates Role Model Leadership, and assists the Human Resources function in developing and executing sound HR programs that drive workforce motivation and employee allegiance, and meet the Company’s goal of being An Employer of Choice
  • Carries the end responsibility for Communications Programs, and is accountable for conducting Quarterly Town Hall Meetings in accordance with Company policy
  • Continuously responsible for working and leading in a collaborative manner and promoting cross-functional teamwork and business efficiency while maintaining superior levels of customer service
  • Collaborates with the Commercial and Marketing teams to drive revenue production meeting or exceeding quarterly targets
  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or technical field required. MBA desired
  • Previous Plant Management experience or equivalent inclusive of minimum 10 years of progressive manufacturing operations/business experience with direct responsibility in the past for manufacturing operations
  • Experience managing multiple sites including international operations facilities
  • Experience developing and implementing an operational strategy and footprint
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the field of Continuous Improvement (PPI, Six Sigma and/or Lean) Methodologies
  • Change agent capable of supporting change initiatives as well as identifying need for and driving change within the Operations organization
  • Strong analytical capability and experience; strong business acumen with proven record of success in highly decentralized, matrix management environment
  • Excellent business acumen combined with an excellent knowledge of manufacturing fabrication, product assembly/test processes and new product introduction launch processes
  • Strong knowledge of quality theory, continuous improvement and Lean methodologies
  • Experienced with coaching and developing Policy Deployment and the use of an X Matrix to align strategy deployment visible to the entire organization
  • Exhibit strong influencing skills in a matrix environment, be approachable and involved with key constituencies at all levels and work effectively across geographic/functional lines
  • Ability to work effectively in different cultures and geographic areas
  • Ability to coach, manage and develop a manufacturing organization
  • Ability to influence multiple personnel in multiple functions without direct supervisory role
  • Excellent communications skills with ability to communicate concepts, opportunities and project plans to all levels of a technical and non-technical organization
  • Ability to manage effectively in a matrix environment and display credibility in mentoring and forging solid, positive working relationships with Operations teams, marketing groups, business units, division staff, and corporate leadership team
  • Ability to improve and implement processes and structure
